The cost of psychiatric care in the military has escalated, including a skyrocketing number of psychiatric admissions, according to a recent USA Today front-page story. These statistics unfortunately reflect a great deal of human suffering on the part of our military.

I recently testified before the Veterans Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives about the increased rates of suicide in the military and pointed out that it probably is caused in part by the increased rate of prescribing psychiatric drugs, especially antidepressants which are scientifically documented to increase suicidal behavior, especially in young men and women of military age. Can we attribute the increased rate of psychiatric hospitalization in part to the same cause--the increased prescription of psychiatric drugs, especially antidepressants?
The Psycho/Pharma use of returning soldiers as a revenue stream is disgusting in and of itself.
However when you add in the fact that their cost/benefit analysis is clearly in the RED Column when looking at benefits given to soldiers versus the BILLIONS given to the pharma and psychiatry industry.
Then they are just clearly taking advantage of this group. As their standard business model shows compared to their other markets, children, the elderly, and the like.

There's always cause and effect in war. If the soldiers, sailors, jet jockeys, and helo crews were better supplied, the hum-vs' armored like the Presidents limo, or MUCH BETTER, moral boosted by "We the people" of the U.S., more ammo, better protective gear, better everything, including their paychecks!, this problem would be less severe, I believe. A nation whose politicians find ways out for their own children, and I don't mean all of them, to NOT go to war is enough to leave anyone, with a heart for their country but no trust in their government (who can blame them), suicidal! Medications are not necessarily a bad thing BUT when we send our military to fight a war and then give them sub-standard equipment to do their jobs with then that's criminal!.....Let's pass a law that governs all states in the Union to NOT LET ANY of the "connected" or privileged citizens of this country out of doing THEIR duty. It makes ME sick to see/ hear about what this country is doing to the very people who protect it - our military and intelligence agencies. Being the daughter of an innovator of military strategy, J. Bankston, I know my father is furious at what is going on. Every single person, even those who "skate" away from going to war, should get down on their knees and beg the forgiveness of ALL of the men and women, including their families, that these courageous people give their lives and their minds to protect us. Anti-depressants are full of adverse reactions as stated in this article and most are dangerous for combat situations. I am a retired nurse/ nursing home investigator and I can tell you this: if a person can be helped without medications then fine but the support of the individual person by those who should support them and back them up with all that they need is essential. This Psychiatrist is right on the money about the meds he's talking about and thank God he spoke up in this forum - it's about damn time we stopped paying $400.00 for a hammer and $1000.00 for a toilet seat and giving contracts to companies that give kick-backs to the politicians and supported those who absolutely need it - OUR MILITARY. Without them? We would be speaking a language other than English! Take the medical money and improve our military and LET THEM FIGHT AND DO WHAT THEY WERE TRAINED TO DO!!! It's always about the money isn't it?!
