Science Daily is reporting that a study shows that newly admitted elderly patients to nursing homes have a higher rate of being prescribed antipsychotic drugs than in previous years. This study found that in 2007, almost one-third of U.S. nursing home residents received antipsychotic drugs. The FDA has issued a warning that there is a great risk of death among older adults with dementia who are taking these agents to control behavioral symptoms.

Additionally, as part of the documents signed when new admissions are taken in, you'll find a release stating the facility has the authority to change prescriptions as needed or warranted.

Then the owners of the facility will make an agreement with drug companies to try new medications, effectively making the facility an experimental drug testing ground. On your grandma.

Ever wonder WHY these facilities have elevated death rates?

Ugh. Thankfully my parents never needed to be placed in a home. Mom died of cancer in our family's house and Dad died nine years later in excellent health at age 96. I figure a stroke got him bad while he was sleeping.

Oh, and for those interested in meds to treat mental disorders here's a website I like. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder, so antidepressants are important to me.

WARNING: Use the site only for your own edification so you'll be better informed when you talk to your doctor. Don't second-guess your doctor; he/she is experienced and qualified to treat you with prescription medications and is your best friend when it comes to maintaining your health.

    As the site maintainer cautions:

Diagnosing yourself from a website is like defending yourself in court, you suddenly have a fool for a doctor.

Yuppers. I've been on antidepressants since 1994. Like all technology they're double-edged. I've not become psychotic, violent, or given to other forms of criminal behavior thank God, but there's definitely a risk when you tinker with your brain chemistry. A risk millions of Americans are willing to take, given the adverts for these meds.

As for antipsychotics I hear they just make you stupid and submissive. Doc put me on lithium circa 1996. That made me stupid, and as a software developer it was crippling. I kicked the drugs and my physician's butt to the curb.
